Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes: You Have More Power Than They Told You

Reversing the trajectory in your 50s and 60s

Conditions: Prediabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Insulin Resistance

If your doctor told you that you are 'prediabetic' and sent you home with no plan, this article is for you. Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet diabetic. Up to 70% of people with prediabetes will develop diabetes — unless they intervene.

Know your numbers

  • A1C — your 3-month average blood sugar (normal under 5.7, prediabetes 5.7–6.4, diabetes 6.5+)
  • Fasting glucose — normal under 100
  • Fasting insulin — often elevated for years before glucose moves (ask for this one)

The 5 moves that actually work

1. Protein and fiber before starch

At every meal, eat the protein and vegetables first. Then the rice or bread. This single habit can drop your post-meal blood sugar 20–30%.

2. Walk after meals

10–15 minutes after eating is more powerful than 30 minutes at any other time of day.

3. Strength training

Muscle is a glucose sponge. More muscle = better blood sugar.

4. Sleep 7+ hours

One night of bad sleep makes you insulin resistant the next day.

5. Ask about metformin

Even at the prediabetes stage. The Diabetes Prevention Program study showed it cuts progression dramatically — even more in people under 60.
