Perimenopause: The 10 Years Before Menopause Nobody Warned You About
Why your 40s feel like a different body
Conditions: Perimenopause, Hot Flashes, Mood Swings, Irregular Periods
Menopause is one day — the day it has been 12 full months since your last period. Perimenopause is the 4 to 10 years leading up to it, and it can start in your late 30s. This is where the wild ride actually happens.
Common signs (you might be brushing off)
- Periods that come closer together, then farther apart, then heavier than ever
- Sleep that breaks at 3am for no reason
- Rage that comes out of nowhere
- Anxiety you never had before
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Brain fog and forgetting words mid-sentence
- Weight gain around the middle
- Vaginal dryness and lower libido
- Heart palpitations
Why Black women's experience is different
The SWAN study (Study of Women's Health Across the Nation) found Black women experience perimenopause symptoms for longer (about 10 years vs. 6 for white women) and report more severe hot flashes. We are also less likely to be offered hormone therapy.
What helps
- Track your cycle and symptoms — bring data to your doctor
- Strength training to protect bone and muscle
- Protein at every meal to manage the hormonal weight shift
- Cool bedroom, moisture-wicking sheets, magnesium glycinate at night
- Ask your doctor about hormone therapy — there is a Black women's version of this conversation that does not start with 'no'
