Money Stress Is a Health Issue
And Nobody Tells Black Women That
Conditions: Financial Stress, Cortisol, Belly Fat, Emotional Eating, General Wellness
Coco says
“Now see... nobody puts 'financial stress' in a wellness app. They talk about meditation and green smoothies like your cortisol doesn't know the difference between a peaceful morning and a morning where you're looking at your bank account wondering how you're going to make it work. We not gatekeeping this conversation. Money stress is a health issue. Period.”
The Conversation Nobody Is Having
Walk into any doctor's office in America. They will ask about your diet. Your exercise. Your sleep. Your alcohol intake. Your stress — usually a vague question about your general stress level on a scale of one to ten.
They will not ask whether you are worried about your electric bill. Whether you are carrying your adult children financially while trying to save for a retirement that feels increasingly out of reach. Whether you wake up at three in the morning running numbers in your head that never quite add up.
They will not ask because the medical system does not have a code for financial stress. It does not have a treatment protocol for it. And so it goes unnamed — while it silently drives some of the most significant health consequences Black women over 50 face.
BrownGirl Well is naming it. Because you deserve to understand what money stress is actually doing to your body.
The Biology of Financial Stress
Your body does not distinguish between a physical threat and a financial one. When you are worried about money — whether that worry is mild background anxiety or acute crisis — your brain activates the same stress response it would activate if you were facing physical danger.
Cortisol and adrenaline flood your system. Your heart rate increases. Your blood pressure rises. Your body mobilizes glucose for quick energy. Digestion slows. Immune function depresses.
This response is brilliant for a short-term emergency. It is devastating when it runs continuously — day after day, week after week, month after month — as financial stress so often does.
What chronic financial stress does to your body
- Belly fat accumulates directly — cortisol specifically directs fat storage to your abdomen.
- Insulin resistance worsens — chronically elevated cortisol means chronically elevated blood sugar.
- Sleep is destroyed — middle-of-the-night waking with the calculations that won't stop.
- Cravings intensify for sugar and carbohydrates — your body is seeking quick energy.
- Immune function declines — making you more vulnerable to illness and slower to recover.
- Systemic inflammation rises — measurable on markers like CRP.
The Black Women's Financial Reality
Financial stress is not evenly distributed. For Black women over 50, the financial picture has specific dimensions that compound the health impact: the wealth gap, the caregiver sandwich, medical debt, and retirement insecurity. None of this is personal failure — it is structural inequality playing out in individual bodies.
What You Can Control — Without Spending More
Protein on a budget
- Eggs — most complete protein at the lowest cost per gram
- Canned tuna and canned salmon — cheaper than fresh, equally nutritious
- Dried beans, lentils, and chickpeas — high protein, high fiber, very cheap, culturally familiar
- Frozen chicken thighs — less expensive than breasts
- Canned sardines — high protein, high omega-3, very cheap
- Cottage cheese and store-brand plain Greek yogurt
- Peanut butter and peanuts — portable, shelf-stable, affordable
Free movement
- Walking costs nothing and is one of the most effective anti-inflammatory activities available
- YouTube has thousands of free chair exercise, water aerobics, and gentle yoga videos for older adults
- Many YMCAs offer reduced or free membership for financial hardship — ask directly
- Parks, sidewalks, and neighborhood streets are free gyms
Cortisol management without spending
- Five minutes of slow diaphragmatic breathing measurably reduces cortisol
- Time in nature — even sitting outside 20 minutes has documented effect
- In-person community time reduces cortisol more than online connection
- Prayer and spiritual practice — evidence-backed and free
What to Say to Your Doctor
“I want you to know that I'm under significant financial stress. I understand this affects cortisol and inflammation. Can we talk about how to manage my health within a limited budget — including generic medications and any patient assistance programs?”
The Bottom Line
Money stress is living in your body. In your cortisol. In your belly fat. In your sleep. In your cravings. In your inflammation. You are not struggling with weight because you lack discipline. You are struggling with weight because your nervous system has been in financial survival mode — and your body has been responding exactly the way bodies respond to sustained stress.
“Do it scared, sis. Even when the money is tight and the stress is high — one good choice today. Just one. That's how we build. Heavy on the progress, light on the perfection.”
