Gut Health After 50: Bloating, Constipation, and the Microbiome Reset

Why your gut changed — and how to make peace with it

Conditions: IBS, Constipation, Bloating, GERD

Did your stomach get weird around menopause? It is not in your head. Estrogen plays a role in gut motility and the diversity of your microbiome. When estrogen drops, bloating, constipation, reflux, and food sensitivities often show up out of nowhere.

The 4 pillars of a better gut

1. Fiber, slowly

Aim for 25–30g a day. Add 5g per week so you do not bloat from the change. Best sources: chia, ground flax, beans, oats, berries, pears with skin, sweet potatoes.

2. Fermented foods

Plain Greek yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso. Just 2 tablespoons a day shifts your microbiome.

3. Hydration with electrolytes

Half your body weight in ounces of water. Add a pinch of salt or an electrolyte if you are dry-mouthed or constipated.

4. Move after meals

Even 5 minutes of slow walking after dinner helps food keep moving and reduces reflux.

When to see a doctor

Blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, new severe pain, or persistent change in bowel habits over 2 weeks — get checked. Colon cancer rates are rising in our community and Black women are more likely to be diagnosed late.
